Before departure to JapanAt first, I was not interested in an exchange student at all because I'm not good at speaking other languages so I think I can't apply for it. But last year, one of my professor recommended me to apply for the clinical practice in Japanese hospital. In addition, I heard my seniors who went Japan for clinical practice had good memories and learned a lot in Japan. Because of the recommendation and remarks of seniors, I got interested in an exchange student and applied for it. Fortunately, I was chosen to go Chiba University for clinical practice. This result made me both happy and nervous because I was unsure a man who cannot speak Japanese at all could live and learn in Japan for a month.
Brief introduction of Chiba prefecture and Chiba university hospital千葉 prefectureis located in the southeast of Tokyo city. It takes about 1 hour to go the center of Tokyo from Chiba downtown by train. Chiba university hospital is public, and the second oldest hospital in Japan. After several renovations, the hospital has 835 beds now. Prof. Kawasaki (He is well-known for 'Kawasaki disease') used to work in the very hospital. A famous drama '白い巨塔(하얀거탑)' and other dramas were shot in the hospital.
Clinical practice in AnesthesiologyI have never learned about anesthesiology in 3rd, 4th grade so I was very worried whether I could learn anesthesiology well in English. Contrary to my worry, Dr. Isono and Dr. Ishikawa explained me about anesthesiology very well. Especially, Dr. Isono taught me how to anesthetize a patient and how to handle some difficult situation by a simulation model of a human body, so-called 'Suzuki Ichiro'.Inje university doesn't have such a complicated simulation model so I was very surprised and impressed by the model. We can practice many various situations enough with the model. I was really jealous of Chiba medical students.Dr. Ishikawa showed me around almost every day, taught me many devices in anesthesia, and allowed me to try to intubate to a real patient. I learned why they check many values and use many devices in devices thanks to him. It was such a shame that I couldn't speak English well. If I could do well, I would ask him and learn more.Other doctors also treated me with respect. I knew the difference between Korean medicine and Japanese medicine by conversation. Unlikely Korea, doctors who major other specialty can learn and work in anesthesiology department for a short term. So I could meet various doctors so I liked to talk with them.
Impression about clinical practice in ChibaAt first, I know I can live in Japan although I know only several Japanese sentences. ^^;;It is the most impressive for me to experience the difference between Korean medicine and Japanese medicine. Also, It was good for me to experience many different cases to anesthetize. I could learn not only anesthesiology but also Japanese culture inside/outside hospital. I want to recommend exchange student strongly for my juniors if they are worried whether they could do well or not in Japan. Finally I appreciate Professor Rhee (Dean of Inje University College of Medicine), Professor Seog (Department of Biochemistry) to allow me to go Japan and Professor Isono to accept me to do clinical practice in anesthesiology department.
The experience in Chiba university hospital was unforgettable to me. Before leaving for Japan, I felt excitedabout my one-month clerkship in Chiba University, as I expected, the course was gorgeous. I already miss Chiba university staffs, doctors and Japanese friends.
I selected Orthopedic department because I'm interested in Surgery and orthopedics is popular in Korea. I was surprised that so many doctors and students have been working and studying in the orthopedic hospital in Japan compared to Korea. Every doctor and student was kind. They always teach me in English regardless of their English skills. In my clinical clerkship, I found that Japanese doctors and students have always been kind and polite to patients despite their stressful and busy daily lives. And I can see many difficult medical cases and the treatment processes in Chiba University hospital. It seems that Japanese surgeons have elaborated surgical skills, especially in Orthopedic surgeons. I felt they have pride in their skills. In Surgery room, I could observe surgery througha camera and then many doctors explained the surgery after it, so Ican easily understand surgery processes.
Many Chiba university students gave us an enthusiastic welcome. I was surprised that there was a circle for international students. Members in Chiba Medical students' International circle held welcome party and took care of us with kind. Icould feel comfortable owing to CMSIC friends' management. Thank you CMSIC!!!I think Chiba university medical school and hospital always make their best effort to internationalization. Japanese doctors are good at English and ready for meetingforeigners. And Chiba university medical students take a course in English from Canadian doctor, Daniel, so they are very good at English.
I strongly recommend Chiba University clinical clerkship to Inje University students. I can't believe it has already been 1 week since I came back to Korea. I have had so much positive experience thanks to a lot of doctors in Orthopedic department. I really hope to see you again in the future. Thank you so much again.
As my dream is to be a globally competitive doctor, I have always applied for the international exchange program of my school at every chance. Attending an exchange program means not only I can get used to a new foreign language but also I can accept the cross-cultural difference which leads me to achieve comprehensive and mature mind to embrace the others. However, I could have missed this beneficial experience because I hesitated to apply for the exchange program to Chiba University Hospital at first. Due to the pressure about the time that has left before the KMLE (Korean Medical Licensing Examination), it was a big concern for me that it could be extravagant to apply for an exchange student. Moreover, abandoning the exchange program could give me the additional options for me to do the bedside training in Inje University Hospital. However, I had faith in that this opportunity should worth more than those worries and besides the thought that this would be my last chance to encounter the overseas exchange program made me eager to apply. Subsequently, I did as my mind says.Among a variety of departments, I applied to the 'Dermatology department' and 'Rehabilitation medicine department' in series because I was deeply interested in these departments and wanted to have a good accomplishment. Luckily, I was assigned to both departments, 3 weeks for Dermatology and 1 week for Rehabilitation medicine each, in Chiba University Hospital.DermatologyFrom the time of entering the university, I had a vague interest in dermatology, and it became clear that I am very fond of it, since I was enamored to study 'Skin & Sensory organs' block lectures with certain dermatology textbooks in my 4th year. My first impression of dermatology was rather a cosmetic procedure which is mainly dealt and advertised especially in the local private hospitals in Korea than treating severe diseases.Interestingly, in dermatology of Chiba University Hospital, I could not witness any procedures for cosmetics. On the other hand, I could see many skin cancer patients who were suffering with basal cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Chiba University Hospital is the only university hospital in Chiba prefecture which has a population of 6.2 million. In Chiba prefecture, multitudes of people are engaged in agriculture or fishing industry which is vulnerable to the exposure of UV light from the sun. For these reasons, Chiba university hospital treats the biggest number of skin cancer patients in Japan.Besides, as dermatology is a clinical division, of course they have great skill in doing proper examination and diagnosis to the patient. They also perform many surgeries such as excision of malignant tumor, amputation and sentinel node biopsy. At the same time, they also conduct the analytic biochemistry assays such as "ELISA" to foresee the severity of the disease or the progression of it. Simultaneously, they read the histological findings of tissue samples on their own, even without consultation of pathology department. I could attain unique things consistently, thanks to all dermatologists in the department. They considered me as I am one of their teammate and let me observe and participate in various procedures with generous attitude.Rehabilitation MedicineAlthough I could only experience the Rehabilitation medicine for the last 4 days, it was quite enough to experience many things in there and get an impression with it. Rehabilitation medicine department in Chiba University Hospital was also the very active department that they have 15~20 new patients every day. Dr. Asano let me observe the physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy for various kinds of cases such as cerebral infarction, cervical spine stenosis, stomach cancer post-op status, ICU patient, brain tumor, aortic dissection, respiratory rehabilitation and so on. I could also visit Chiba Rehabilitation Center nearby and see more chronic and severe patients who receive the special rehabilitation so that I could feel many different aspects of Rehabilitation medicine. Moreover, I visited government-affiliated welfare organization and identified the work of Rehabilitation medicine doctor that they assess and check the lesion of the patients who use the orthotics or prosthetics to help them get a subsidy from government to advance into the new devices.Leisure timeOne of the biggest advantages of Chiba University Hospital is that it is near the capital city of Japan, Tokyo. I had 5 consecutive holidays called 'Golden week' during the clerkship in Chiba University Hospital. So me and my co-workers could travel around Chiba, Tokyo and suburbs during these weekends. I went to Harajuku, Shibuya, Fuji-Q Highland, Shinjuku, Hakone, Gotemba, Odaiba, Akihabara, Nikko, Asakusa and so on. The group included not only 3 Koreans but also with Chiba medical school students as well as doctors in Chiba University Hospital, so it was an exceptional time to raise satisfying relationships with foreign friends.
Closing remarks
Now I come back to my daily life and recall my life in Chiba, I earned so plenty of priceless memories and it was absurd of me to be uncertain of participating the program. I participated in every training schedule vigorously because I applied for the departments that I have been attracted to, so consequently I could get many things. I obtained ample knowledge, made a large number of friendly relationships with good Japanese doctors and friends. Furthermore, the impression of the departments and this exchange program definitely set a direction of my life. Above all, I deeply appreciate to the faculty of Inje University and Chiba University for giving me valuable opportunity.
